The Swiss Society for the Common Good (SSCG) is committed to a system of democracy that is supported by everyone in Switzerland. Democracy is a social process. It thrives on people being informed, being able to participate and listening to each other – even when opinions differ.
A vibrant democratic culture is created when as many people as possible can provide their individual perspectives and institutions remain open to different opinions. These include issues of representation, access to political influence, the quality of public dialogue and the conditions under which people can participate in the first place.
In its work, the SSCG combines analysis, funding and specific projects. It monitors social developments, supports civil society projects and brings together stakeholders to work on solutions. The foundation for this is a broad concept of democracy that does not end with elections and votes, but embraces the day-to-day interplay of dialogue, participation and orientation.
SSCG projects to promote a vibrant culture of democracy
- Pro Futuris – think + do tank of the SSCG: Research, dialogue formats and new approaches to participation in democracy, social change and public discourse.
- “Unternehmen für Demokratie” network: Businesses also bear responsibility for democracy. The “Unternehmen für Demokratie” (“Companies for democracy”) network co-initiated by Pro Futuris wants to take this responsibility into account and does so as a first step with workshops on shaping the future for learners.
- “Vom Wert der Demokratie” – video profiles: In the “Vom Wert der Demokratie” (“On the value of democracy”) video profiles, people who hail from countries with an autocratic ruler tell us what democratic freedom means for their lives.
